Janome embroidery machines: the JEF file
Janome Memory Craft and the Elna eXpressive series read JEF. A JEF file stores colours as Janome thread numbers and carries a hoop code.
| Janome / Elna | |
|---|---|
| File format | JEF |
| Colour | In the file: Janome thread numbers |
| Common hoops | 110 × 110 mm, 140 × 140 mm, 170 × 200 mm, 200 × 280 mm (by model) |
| Transfer | USB stick; direct connection on some models |
What's particular to JEF
- A JEF file says which hoop it was made for. If your machine doesn't know that hoop, make it again at a smaller size.
- Colours follow the Janome chart; with another thread brand, use the nearest match on the sheet.
- If the machine won't show the design, it's usually bigger than the hoop; make it again at a smaller size.
Getting the file onto the machine
Download as JEF
Pick 'Janome / Elna' as the machine in the tool; the main download is JEF and the design is checked against your hoops.
Copy it to a USB stick
Use a short, plain file name.
Open it on the machine
Attach the hoop, pick the design and check the start point.
Tips for Janome and Elna
Is it the same file on an Elna?
Yes: the Elna eXpressive series reads the same JEF format as Janome; check your model's manual for its hoop sizes.
A design bigger than the largest hoop
Shrink a design that's over 200 × 280 mm, or split it into parts in embroidery software and sew them in turn.
Fabric and stabilizer
Use cutaway on knits (tees, polos) and tearaway on wovens; on towels and velvet add a water-soluble topping so stitches don't sink into the pile.
Open a JEF file
See inside without installing anything.
