How it works
Drop a picture
A photo, a logo or a drawing (PNG, JPEG, WebP). Transparent areas and a plain background can be left unstitched.
Set the size
Choose 11, 14, 16 or 18-count Aida and give the width in stitches or centimetres; the height follows the picture.
Pick the colours
The image is reduced in CIELAB colour space and each colour is matched to its nearest DMC stranded cotton (CIEDE2000). Fewer colours make a calmer chart.
Check and print
The quality score flags scattered single stitches, tiny areas and look-alike colours. Download a multi-page PDF with a colour key or a single PNG.
What you get
Symbol chart
One symbol per colour, a bold line every 10 stitches, row and column numbers, centre arrows. Big charts are split over A4 pages with 3 repeated rows and columns, shaded, so pages line up.
Colour key and floss
DMC number, name, stitch count, thread length and skeins for each colour, worked out from the Aida count and the number of strands.
Quality score
Confetti (single stitches with no neighbour of the same colour), the smallest areas, colour count and look-alike pairs, with honest tips to fix them.
Backstitch outline
Optional outline along strong colour edges in one dark thread, counted in the floss list.
Size and time
Finished size in cm and inches, fabric to cut with a 5 cm margin, and a stitching-time range.
Private
Everything is computed on your device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.
Tips for a chart that is pleasant to stitch
- Logos and cartoons: 6–15 colours, dithering off, tidy-up on. Clean blocks of colour are quick to stitch.
- Photos: 20–35 colours and dithering on give soft shading, at the cost of many single stitches (confetti). That is normal for photo patterns; the score tells you how much.
- Faces need room: give portraits at least 100–150 stitches across.
- On 18-count, stitches are small (1.4 mm): fine detail shows, but the piece takes longer for the same size in cm.
- Colours on screen are approximations: hold the real floss against the chart before you buy.
Questions
Which Aida count should I choose?
14-count is the usual start: 5.5 stitches per centimetre with 2 strands. 11-count is bigger and easier on the eyes (3 strands); 16 and 18 give finer detail with smaller stitches.
How is the floss worked out?
Each full cross uses about (2√2 + 2) times the stitch size in thread, plus 20% for starting, ending and travel. A DMC skein is 8 m of 6 strands, so with 2 strands one skein gives 24 m. We round up to whole skeins; buy one extra of the main colours.
What is confetti?
A single stitch with no neighbour of the same colour. Lots of confetti means many thread starts and stops. Turn dithering off, keep tidy-up on, or use fewer colours to reduce it.
Can I use it for a logo I don't own?
Make charts only from pictures you own or may use. For personal stitching of your own photos, go ahead.
Is it free?
Yes. The chart, the PDF and the PNG are free, with no signup.
