Brother embroidery machines: the PES file

Brother and Baby Lock home and semi-pro embroidery machines read PES. Besides the needle path, a PES file carries the colours from the Brother thread chart.

Getting the file onto the machine

  1. Download as PES

Pick 'Brother / Baby Lock' as the machine in the tool; the main download button gives you PES.

  2. Copy it to a USB stick

Put it in the root folder with a short, plain file name (e.g. logo1.pes).

  3. Open it on the machine

Tap the USB icon on the machine's screen, pick the design and check its placement in the hoop.

Common mistakes

What Brother owners ask

Which hoop for a left-chest logo?

A 100 × 100 mm hoop is enough; make the logo 80–90 mm on its longest side. A full back needs the 200 × 300 mm hoop.

Can I sew caps?

Single-needle home machines mostly have no cap frame. Multi-needle models such as the Brother PR series take a cap frame and still read PES.

How many colours is sensible?

On a single-needle machine every colour change means rethreading by hand. Two to six colours sew quickly and cleanly for a logo.
